“Demers'
service is fantastic, and the rigs are holding up
to our use better than what we used in the past.”

Demers Ambulances hold up under tough conditions
Wear and tear on an ambulance is expected in busy, urban areas,
but providing EMS on rural, backcountry roads gives vehicle stress
a whole new meaning. That, and the fact that Newport Ambulance
Service in Newport, Vermont, was expanding, was reason enough to
buy new vehicles, and Quebec-based Demers Ambulance, just 90 miles
across the Canadian border, met all the requirements, says Newport
Chief Executive Director Michael Paradis.
“We cover about 300 square miles of northern Vermont, which
is primarily rural back roads and no roads,” says Paradis. “The
ambulances we had weren’t holding up to what we wanted, so
we decided to try a different make and one that was made closer
to us. We tried a couple of Demers’ vehicles and found them
to be as reliable as anything we could get anywhere else. The service
is fantastic, and the rigs are holding up to our use better than
what we used in the past.”
Newport has five Demers vehicles and is about to replace the remaining
two with long-distance transport trucks that will be modified to
meet Newport’s needs.
“All of our other trucks are standard—no special equipment,” says
Paradis. “Replacement parts are easy to find, and my maintenance
man was trained by Demers, so they can usually talk him through
any problems, which we have very few of. The newest truck on our
lot right now is a 2004 model; the other four are from 2002. We
put between 50,000-60,000 miles a year on them on roads that are
often full of potholes, bumps, ice and snow. Demers has some pretty
fancy trucks, but because of what we put them through, I don’t
go overboard.”

Fisher of Derby Line
Real-life crash proves Mystère’s
toughness
What started out as a regular, non-emergency patient
transfer for ambulance technician Amy Fisher of Derby
Line, Vermont, turned into an unexpected drama when
the Mystère ambulance she was riding in left the road and plunged 320 feet down an embankment after an unexpected maneuver. “I was taking the patient’s vitals and preparing to radio the hospital when the driver yelled at me to hang on. I grabbed the netting and suddenly we somersaulted at least three times. It was wild.”
Ms. Fisher, who was badly bruised but otherwise not
seriously injured, credits the ambulance’s ultra-sturdy
construction with saving their lives. “The
Mystère was incredible, the box was hardly even
dented, the patient was still in her stretcher, the
driver only had a few cuts. They towed it away on its
two front wheels.” Derby Line Ambulance Services
has two Mystère on its fleet of four vehicles
and is planning to purchase a third soon. “We couldn’t
ask for anything better,” says Ms. Fisher. “The
customer service is great, and the Mystère are totally
reliable.”
